Pastor Marcel ministers to 7 different congregations and six schools in the region of <b>Saint-Marc, Haiti.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span></b><span style="font-weight:normal">Saint-Marc is about 60 miles northwest of Port-au-Prince.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Their ministry, Evangelical Living Water Ministry of Haiti, has a three-fold mission:<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> January 12<sup>th</sup> earthquake.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Video of the tent cities and destruction can also be found at <a href="http://www.molliemoore.blogspot.com">www.molliemoore.blogspot.com</a>.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>In the meantime, here are the highlights of what God did for the Haitian people through your gifts and prayers.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span><i>Highlights will explain how the team grew mentally, physically, and spiritually.</i></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><b><i>The team grew mentally:</i></b><span style="font-weight:normal;font-style:normal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>God is so good!<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Before we left, I mailed a letter asking for support.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>I wanted to see God send me there without one cent from me so I had no reason to boast of myself.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>He raised enough for each team member to be able to pay for the airline ticket, food and lodging ($13,500 total for the whole team), and then God went farther.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>He raised approximately another $26,000 for us to give to the EMEVI Ministries.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>As the team leader said, “I need to raise my expectations of God.”<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><b><i>The team grew mentally (part two): </i></b><span style="font-weight:normal;font-style:normal"><span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>The “Moms” of our team helped the doctor hold a clinic while the men helped build classrooms and church pews.<span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>One 18-month-old baby boy suffered from pneumonia.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>His parents had left and his 12-year-old aunt brought the lifeless, floppy child to the clinic.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>We watched him overnight, and he the next morning he walked and drank water.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Had our Father not given us the chance to see him that day, he may have not made it through the week.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><b><i>The team grew physically:</i></b><span style="font-weight:normal;font-style:normal"><span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>The team drove 3 hours, flew about 1,500 miles, rode motorcycles for 30 minutes, and walked.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>And walked.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>And walked.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>For 5.5 hours.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>And we arrived in a special place called Bateille.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Situated in the mountains, Bateille is one of many communities the government does not know about.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>In fact, they refer to themselves as the “forgotten people.”<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>The team accomplished building 12 pews for a church where people sat on the dirt floor or the largest rocks they could find.<span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>Our teammate was the first doctor to be in Bateille as long as anyone could remember.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>46 of the 47 people seen had malaria.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><b><i>The team grew spiritually:</i></b><span style="font-weight:normal;font-style:normal"><span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>God challenged me to read Isaiah 54-56 each day.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>I started to memorize Isaiah 54.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>The most prominent lesson I learned came from Isaiah 55:11.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>“…so is my word that goes out from my mouth:<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Even if the people of did not understand English, God will use me.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Even if I feel empty and ineffective, God uses my hand to plant His seed.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>If I am listening and doing what He asks, I am blessed and He is glorified.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>And that’s all that matters.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal">So I challenge you with this thought:<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Now that you know, what will you do?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>I praise God for the support of prayers and money that you lovingly gave so that you too could serve the Haitian people along side of me.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>And with that praise comes the request that you consistently remain obedient in It was just as hot and muggy as it was at home. We went with a team of 9 members. One was a doctor, so we held clinics. We also helped build a school and built pews. There are many, many of these semi-permanent housing communities. The issue is that August-October is the rainy season with the possibility of hurricanes. Most of the trail looked like this--beautiful scenery, but a difficult climb! Why would you do this? To visit a special place. A place called Bateille. The people are beautiful, calm, truly peaceful. They have no running water, no plumbing, no electricity, no vehicles (except a few mules), and no worries beyond where to find food. The believers in Haiti are truly beautiful, and are living examples of how to live knowing that only God will take care of your daily needs. Although the Haitian people face struggles that are on the surface and very evident, their country is not unlike ours. People are selfish. It is the result of a fallen, sinful world. However, our country tends to be better at covering up our greed under titles like "success" and "relaxation" and "stress-free environments." Our self-obsession here is the same that it is there. May God release us to freely love on others without a motivation of "how will this benefit me?"<br /><br />In conclusion, I leave you with this thought: "Now that you know, what will you do?" I read that question on another blog and it has stuck with me throughout this trip and the return home. I’ve scoured the earth for the best formulas, plans, and motivation to keep my life in check.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>And yet, I still see a woman whose makeup must come with a plastic surgeon’s price tag sitting in Denny’s.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>(By the way did you know they make tattooed permanent eyeliner now?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>It’s true!)</p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:200%"><span style="mso-tab-count:1"> </span>Let’s be honest.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>I don’t lack the “Purple Passion” eye shadow she has.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>I lack a sense of contentment in my attitude.<span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>I lack a heavenly view of my identity.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>I lack an understanding of God’s Word.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>And I lack acting on what I know is true.</p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:200%"><span style="mso-tab-count:1"> </span>The Bible says, “<b>All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away</b><span style="font-weight:normal">”<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>(Isaiah 64:6).<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>This verse isn’t intended to guilt ridden anyone.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>It evens up the score.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>I’m not perfect, but neither are the ones I envy.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:200%"><span style="mso-tab-count:1"> </span>God has each one of us in his hands, and he’s working out the imperfections.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>“<b>Yet, O LORD, you are our Father.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand</b></span>” (emphasis added).<span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>So that gal with the shade of “Purple Passion” on her peaches and cream complexion has issues to contend with that I do not see.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent:.5in;line-height:200%">Besides, if I don’t recognize my jealously for what it is and confess it properly, I have a larger problem.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>“<b>Woe to him who quarrels with his Maker, to him who is but a potsherd among the potsherds on the ground.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Does the clay say to the potter, ‘What are you making?’<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Does your work say, ‘He has no hands’?</b><span style="font-weight:normal">”<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>(Isaiah 45:9).<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>We are all clay.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Why question the Creator?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>I am demeaning what He does in my life or in someone else’s life by not recognizing His grand plan.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>So how do I get over my “Green with Envy” shaded attitude?</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:200%"><span style="mso-tab-count:1"> </span>Overcome jealously by:</p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:200%">1) Praise<i>.</i><span style="font-style:normal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>I praise my God for what I have.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>He gave it to me, so he can take it away.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:200%">2) Identity<i>.</i><span style="font-style:normal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>I realize my identity is in God.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Instead of looking at my situations and what I don’t possess, I ground myself in what He says I am.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>I am clay, but moldable clay.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>I’ll humble myself to His working.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:200%">3) Read.<span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>I can’t realize my identity without doing some basic research.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>For me, if I notice that I am overly aware of what others are wearing or doing, it’s probably because I didn’t have a quality quiet time.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Being in the Word is so desperately important because you don’t know what you’re going to face!<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>(Even if it is a face with great makeup!)</p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:200%">4) Step<i> out.</i><span style="font-style:normal"> I have to acknowledge why I feel the twinge of jealously or dissatisfaction, and then act on what the Holy Spirit says.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Pray for the one you feel that spasm of jealously over.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Don’t dwell on it, but move on to what God is doing in you too!</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:200%"><span style="mso-tab-count:1"> </span>Perfect people don’t exist.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>I’m a piece of clay, and I’m glad for my “imperfections!”<span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>It gives God a chance to show His glory when He helps me overcome jealously. It mimicked office executives cutting a deal. The dramatic routine highlighted dancers using an actual table as a prop to jump over, dance on, and shake hands under. I happened to record it, and it’s one of my favorites. I even labeled the VHS, “Do Not Record Over!”<br /><br />-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------<br /><br />If you have not taken time to really read the book of Esther, do so soon. Esther highlights the way God works in unseen ways, while the rest of humanity is quite oblivious to what He is doing because of love.<br /><br />Here is the verse we will ponder together: Esther 9:1b says, “<span style="font-weight: bold;">…On this day the enemies of the Jews had hoped to overpower them, but now the tables were turned and the Jews got the upper hand over those who hated them.”</span> Meaning, the Jewish race had an enemy that had it in for them. The death warrant read, “<span style="font-weight: bold;">destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews</span>” (Esther 3:13). Instead, in 484 BC, the Jews in Persia survived because God intervened.<br /><br />Interesting. Even all those years ago, the cliché that the “tables were turned” was still effective speech. For me it makes the Bible that much more intimate and understandable. I know how tables can be turned!<br /><br />Jesus turned the tables for us. His opponent Satan had it in for us. The death warrant read, “<span style="font-weight: bold;">steal and kill and destroy</span>” (John 10:10). Instead, God intervenes because of love.<br /><br />Let’s enter the room at the Last Supper. “<span style="font-weight: bold;">When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve…. While they were eating, Jesus took break, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins</span>” (Matthew 26:20, 26-28).”<br /><br />Lots of traditions happen around tables. The most obvious is thanksgiving. A church tradition mirrors what we read. It’s called communion. It is important to gather around this table with other believers, because it reminds us that Jesus turned the table for us. Without Jesus dying on the cross days later, Satan could fulfill his wishes to “<span style="font-weight: bold;">steal and kill and destroy</span>” (John 10:10). Instead, God intervened and turned the table for me, for you, for humanity.<br /><br />------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------<br /><br />Table turning happens in other places in Scripture. Only these tables were not only turned, they were overturned. John 2:15 says, “<span style="font-weight: bold;">So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple area, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables</span>.” Do you notice in this scene how Jesus overturned “<span style="font-style: italic;">their</span> tables” (emphasis added)? This passage does not tell us about the tables that did not flip.1 I think perhaps some tables He did not mind stood after Jesus walked away; at least His altar. God will keep things that bring Him glory in our lives. Unnecessary tables felt Jesus’ hand overturn them. He took what people found so necessary and flipped it over. Doesn’t He do the same with us?<br /><br />In Esther, we see that God loved His people enough to turn the tables to avoid their utter destruction. In Matthew, God loves us enough to turn the tables to avoid our utter destruction. In John, Jesus did the table flipping quite unexpectedly, again to avoid utter destruction of true worship and true love.<br /><br />Some scholars call the table turning “reversal of destiny.” It’s a pivot, a move to start heading the opposite direction. It is when the dancer takes a step and finds themselves facing a different direction. Even if it is on a VHS tape marked, “Do Not Record Over!” Keep your eyes out for tables. We will drink from God’s fire hose. God’s use of symbolism in His Word helps to make complex ideas simple. Nevertheless, this idea of cups can present challenges. Let’s just say the cup is neither half-full nor half-empty. Cups can be full and empty at the same time. We will look at the cup as a symbol for our salvation and praises, and also as our contentment.<br /><br />Psalms 116:12-13 NIV says, “<strong>How can I repay the LORD for all his goodness to me? I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD</strong>.” Offer God an empty cup to fill. Coming empty to God will allow Him to fill you up without yesterday’s leftovers. Clean cups are empty cups. It’s Oliver Twist asking, “Please sir, can I have some more?” Because once you experience God’s goodness in salvation, you do want more.<br /><br />Do not have an empty cup for long. The verse reads, “<strong>How can I repay the LORD for all his goodness to me?”</strong> This implies that the author already had his fill of blessings. He already praised God for the good things in his life. So how do we go to God empty when our cup is already full of blessings and praises? It is continuous. First we experience God’s blessing, then we empty ourselves out in response. We come to God empty again, and “<strong>call on the name of the LORD</strong>” to get filled up.<br /><br />I like the New English Translation (NET) Bible’s rendition of the same verses, “<strong>How can I repay the Lord for all His acts of kindness to me? I will celebrate my deliverance, and call on the name of the Lord</strong>.” It does not say, “How can I repay the Lord? I will get disciplined.” All discipline will fall away without desire to back it up. If you truly recognize what God did for you through Jesus’ death and resurrection, it won’t be hard to lift up your life to him. Coming to Him will be a celebration.<br /><br />Now let’s hold the cup in our other hand and look at it from a different perspective. Psalm 16:5 says, “<strong>LORD, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure</strong>.” God assigns our cups. Is your cup too big for God to fill? Are you unsatisfied? Are you holding a sippy cup, wondering why the liquid goes out but not in? Are you asking for more than your cup can hold? These are valid questions when you present your cup to God through prayer. He gave us the cup. He gave us life. Who are we to decide what goes in the cup that wasn’t our cup to begin with?<br /><br />God tells us to offer our lives or our circumstances and He will fill us back up. “<strong>You are my portion, O LORD; I have promised to obey your words</strong>” (Psalm 119:57). God is enough for me. Ever feel drained because you are overwhelmed? Let it go. When you feel that your portion in life is not enough, obey God’s words, and lift up the cup of salvation. He saved you, He can take care of it for you, and all you have to do is lift it up. By letting it go, you will have obeyed. You can’t offer something by grasping it so tightly that someone has to pry it from your fingers. You can’t be thinking about it, controlling it, and offering it at the same time.<br /><br />I once experienced trying to control what my cup looked like. I tried to impress everyone I came in contact with. I wanted my plastic cup to look like a hand-painted teacup. A friend asked me if I was lifting up my cup of salvation. Was I so focused on controlling everyone’s thoughts about me that I forgot to celebrate Jesus? My faithful God restored my life when I started to praise Him—and He gave me a new cup!<br /><br />So lift your cups. Sometimes I can walk away, but in this case I had to stay with my teammates and finish the job. I tried to stay positive, and instead fell silent. Finally my friend says to me, “Isn’t it true that….” I pretended to stick my fingers in my ears and said, “What? I can’t hear you. My ears can’t hear complaining today.” Everyone laughed and went back to work, but I was serious.<br /><br />How can I live in a negative world, without succumbing to the temptation to rattle off the latest complaint?<br /><br />1) Stop. “<strong>Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen</strong>.” (Ephesians 4:29). When complainers have the floor, don’t compete for the limelight. “<strong>He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin</strong>.” (Proverbs 13:3). You are in charge of your mouth, not others’ mouth. However, it isn’t enough just to not participate and stay silent.<br /><br />2) Think positively. Just like any other form of temptation, sin starts when we think about it. So even if you are silent during negative conversations, you still involve yourself. Start by not stating your complains, but also take control of your thoughts. 2 Corinthians 10:5b says “…<strong>we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ</strong>.” Take your mind and “<strong>Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind</strong>…” (Romans 12:2a).<br /><br />3) Then speak positively. “<strong>My mouth will speak words of wisdom; the utterance from my heart will give understanding</strong>” (Psalm 49:3). This verse not only encourages us to “speak words of wisdom”, but it also gives us insight to where those words come from: the heart. If your heart is not right, your words will be vicious rather than peaceful. “<strong>And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus</strong>” (Philippians 4:7). <br /><br />4) Stick close to God’s Word. “<strong>How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word</strong>” (Psalm 119:9). Without memorizing, reading, obeying and responding to God’s Bible, you will not succeed in keeping negativity out.<br /><br />5) Focus. In order to keep our mouths clean and our hearts pure, focus on what matters. “<strong>Put away perversity from your mouth; keep corrupt talk far from your lips. Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you</strong>” (Proverbs 4:24-25). “<strong>Keep corrupt talk far from your lips</strong>…” includes keeping your physical distance if possible. If you cannot get away to complainers you can always turn the negative into a positive. “<strong>Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but thanksgiving</strong>” (Ephesians 5:4). Meaning, you can’t stay quiet any longer. Change the subject. Make a lighthearted joke. Take their grumbling, and turn it into a joyful occasion. It won’t be hard to do so if you stay focused. No one said it was easy or comes naturally at first. It takes years of practice to “<strong>take captive every thought</strong>” (2 Corinthians 10:5b), but keep focused.<br /><br />6) Lastly, keep praising. “<strong>Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things</strong>” (Philippians 4:8). If you don’t have a memory verse, this is the place to start. A little game I play when negativity is around goes like this: I repeat this verse, and then take it one verb at a time. So, for instance, I hear a negative comment about a coworker. Okay, my verse tells me to think about whatever is true. Well, this comment isn’t true, but it is true that she helped me yesterday. Lord, thank you for helpful hands. Okay, now whatever is noble...and I keep going down the list.
